Pentax K100D Super. The 6.1-megapixel K100D was the lowest-priced D-SLR to offer a built-in sensor-shift Shake Reduction system. Now, the K100D Super adds an effective DR (Dust Removal) system and compatibility with Pentax’s new SDM lenses to its predecessor’s good features, while retaining a very low price. Picture and Scene modes make it simple to optimize camera settings for a variety of popular shooting subjects and situations. The sensor’s focal-length factor is 1.5x. Estimated Street Price: $520.

Samsung GX-1S. The GX-1S is a slick-looking, 6.1-megapixel D-SLR with a 2.5-inch LCD monitor, rugged stainless-steel chassis, good metering and AF performance, ISOs from 200-3200, depth-of-field preview, spot metering (plus center-weighted and 16-segment) and more. Designed in conjunction with Pentax, the camera can use a wide range of Pentax lenses, as well as Schneider lenses designed for it. Focal-length factor is 1.5x. Estimated Street Price: $499.

Sony DSLR-A100. Sony packed a lot into this low-priced model, including a 10.2-megapixel CCD, sensor-shift image stabilization that works with all lenses, sensor dust removal, two-level Dynamic Range Optimization, Eye-Start AF, 2.5-inch LCD monitor, 3 fps shooting, built-in TTL flash and recording to CompactFlash or Memory Stick media. The DSLR-A100 is compatible with a wide range of Sony and Minolta Maxxum lenses, plus new Carl Zeiss lenses made for the camera. The APS-C image sensor’s focal-length factor is 1.5x. Estimated Street Price: $699.

    MID-RANGE MODELS

Canon EOS 40D. Canon’s new EOS 40D is a quantum leap forward from its excellent EOS 30D predecessor. The 40D features a 10.1-megapixel Canon CMOS image sensor, a new AF system that’s quicker and more accurate, 14-bit A/D conversion for four times the number of colors, 6.5 fps shooting, the latest DIGIC III image processor for better performance and image quality, a three-inch LCD monitor with Live-View mode, Canon’s Integrated Cleaning System to remove sensor dust and lots more.
